Biometrics used as Physical and Behavioral Identifiers

Introduction

The word Biometric is derived from a Greek word Bio- which means life and the word metric which means to measure. Therefore, a biometric sensor is a transducer that changes the biometric treat of a person into an electrical signal which then recognizes the identity of a person. The biometric device is a security device used in various areas like works places, Immigrations, Handheld or personal devices, etc. use to identify the physical and behavioral characteristics of a person. The biometric device can be of various kind. It can be the once with Fingerprint, Face recognition, Voice recognition, Access cards, etc.

In comparison to the traditional method of security with the passwords and pins, the used of biometric attendance machine has the potentials to make authentication dramatically faster, easier and accurate. The only key is to input the data correctly into the biometric attendance system.

This has led to enhanced security in the banking environment.

Ø  Government Agencies: as the biometric technology is improving the government has increased the use of biometric in the national identification programs, like the UID, the Aadhar creation process, E-passports, Driving license enrollments, voters enrollments, etc. This provides easier and faster identification of a person and prevents security threats.

·          Face Recognition

A face recognition system is done through a biometric computer application that can identify the image of a person by comparing and analyzing the various patterns saved into its memory. The biometric systems are majorly used in security systems where there is a need to check the entry or exit of a person on day to day basis.

The face recognition is used in the following industries:

Ø  Human Resource Management: It is an area that extensively uses face recognition to grant access to authorized people and also to maintain time and attendance records. These organizations use a biometric attendance machine to maintain the attendance log of the employees.  

Ø  Health care centers: The health care centers use face recognition to enable the medical history and the other details of the customers/clients without entering the file number or other details of the patient. This method helps to extract the correct medical records of the patient eliminating the chances of mistyping and wrong records. This method also prevents duplication of records hence enhances the security level in such organizations.

It is very complicated to hack and makes it a safer way from the traditional securities measures of passwords and pin codes that are easily accessible. The traditional methods are easy to hack as compared to modern methods.
